AFMC Women's Voice Award First Place Winner! Marissa M.

" But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33

On Saturday, January 22,2011, the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs sponsored the annual Junior Auditions at Birmingham-Southern College. This audition gave students generous cash awards of $100 to $400 each. The catagories for the auditions were: piano, string, wind, women's voice, and men's voice. Each catogory was judged by college professors, and comments were returned to the students. All students had to perform a minimum of 15 minutes of memorized solo work, and the music had to be advanced. One of the pieces had to be by an American composer.

MVJMC participated in this audition for the first time with vocal student Marissa M. We are excited to announce that Marissa was the first place winner in women's voice!

Marissa entered this audition with the desire to be a witness for Christ. We have been praying for months that Christ would be seen and heard through her. She also desired to gain more performance experience, and to improve vocally by reading the judges comments. Marissa was accompanied by Dr. William Schleifer, and her program consisted of seven selections: Se tu ma mi, This Little Rose, The Lord is my Light, Nel Cor piu non mi sento, American Lullaby, Give Me Jeus, and Everywhere I Look. Marissa presented a moving, spiritual performance as Christ radiated His light through her face, voice and actions. Christ truly sang through her and enabled her to give her best performance ever.
One of the judges, from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, stayed for the award ceremony and spoke with Marissa after the ceremony was over. The opportunity to tell him that she attended a Christian school, and to invite him to our church was presented at this time.

The Lord honored desires, answered prayers, and blessed Marissa's practice and self-denial over the past two months with a WIN!

We would like to express our appreciation to her parents, her accompanist, and all her praying family and friends for their love and support. Special thanks to the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs for sponsoring auditions, and awarding cash prizes that may be used for future college tuition.
